Diploma in Psychodynamic Counselling

A professional counselling qualification accredited by the BACP and BPC. Qualifies participants to work as counsellors in an organisational setting.

Entry Requirements

  • Recent completion of WCP Foundation in Psychodynamic Skills & Attitudes or equivalent
  • Be in once-weekly therapy with a Wessex-approved therapist for 6 months prior to starting
  • Evidence of intellectual potential to complete theoretical elements including written assignments
  • Previous experience in a helping or supportive role using counselling skills
  • Able to attend all course dates

Course Structure

The diploma consists of 2 Theory Years followed by Clinical Consolidation years. The Foundation (Stage 1) counts as the pre-clinical year.

Runs on Mondays. Two cohorts: 9:00am–4:00pm or 12:45pm–8:00pm. Each day includes theory seminar, clinical seminar, small-group supervision and an experiential group.

The final consolidation year takes place on Fridays for 30 weeks. Trainees must aim to see clients 2–4 hours per week. Personal therapy (once weekly) is required throughout.

Course Aims

  • Equip trainees with the skills and techniques of the psychodynamic model for professional counselling
  • Equip trainees to work as reflective practitioners using psychodynamic theory within a pluralistic culture
  • Inform trainees of the context and limits of the psychodynamic approach
  • Encourage trainees to further learning by engaging with research and development
  • Equip trainees to work ethically with difference in a diverse cultural setting

Assessment

Theory: Two 2,000-word essays per academic year (Years 2 & 3)

Clinical Seminar: Attendance and active engagement in Years 2, 3 and 4

Supervision: Achievement of approval for practice by your supervisor

Client Work: 150 supervised client hours, including a one-year relationship with one client

Final Clinical Paper: One 4,000-word case study

Achievement of all the above entitles you to work as a BPC Registered Counsellor and BACP Counsellor, eligible to register with the PSA accredited National Voluntary Register.
